Hello,
I am trying to come back up to speed on linux after a 20 year hiatus. I
have been playing with the Linux Mint live USB sticks, and I like what I
see. The last thing that seems to be a bit messed up is my Microsoft
Lifecam VX-7000. After doing some research I found your website and mailing
list. I noticed that my device (045e:0723) is not officially supported, but
many other Microsoft webcams are supported.
Even though it is not officially supported, when I was using the Linux Mint
16 live USB image, I was often able to get a video image, but I had some
trouble getting the microphone to work. There may well have been something
that I was doing wrong, or a missing library for the sound, I am not sure.
However, the webcam is not always detected under Linux Mint 16.
When I recently tried the Linux Mint 17 live USB image, the webcam is
detected as shown in lm17_dmesg.log, but is never installed. I don't know
enough about things yet to say whether this is a problem with Linux Mint or
a problem with the UVC driver, but since my webcam is not on the officially
supported list I thought that I may as well ask here. Did the UVC driver
change between Linux Mint 16 and Linux Mint 17? It almost seems as though
it's a matter of timing that may be different between the two versions.
Is there something that I can do to make it work? I have attached dmesg.log
and lsusb.log from both Linux Mint 16 and Linux Mint 17 for your inspection.
Both are failed runs, but if it would help I can try to repeatedly boot
Linux Mint 16 until I get a good run. Please let me know if you would like
any further information or if you have any advice.
