Hi,

I am new to this list and I am sorry if my questions belong elsewhere or so.

I am looking at the new webcams with UVC 1.5 support (e.g. Logitech C930e) and wonder what kind of support I can hope for in the kernel and from when?
After all its x-mas and a WebCam is on the list but without UVC 1.5 support the C930e for example doesnt make much sense. If there is any support I would love to try it out and let you know how it rolls.

Hope I found the right place.
Cheers,
Joel

Hi Joel,

Funny you should ask. A couple of us had an e-mail thread going on this
with the author of guvcview. His name is Paulo Assis and I CC'd him on
this e-mail. guvcview supports the C930e, but v4l does not yet. Below is
one of the responses that we received from Paulo.

Best Regards,

Rob

Hi,
Hi Paulo,
Good work! Why are there even standards then? Also, the 930e is supposed
to support H264 SVC. I was hoping SVC would help to deliver HD on SIP
without sacrificing quality. :-|
You can configure some parameters of the H264 stream for the c930, by using
the h264 extension unit. guvcview support these now. I added a H264 control
tab, so you just set the parameters and commit them, unfurtunatelly every
time you change the stream configuration (resolution, fps) these are reset,
so you need to commit the controls again.

I'm not sure about the c930, but the BCC950 at least is intentend for
Business video conferencing, so it should deliver HD video over SIP without
problems. I don't think the c930 is much different though, although a
couple of the config parameters seem to work in one device and not the
other.

You can check these on the USB_Video_Payload_H_264_1_0 document, for the
Usb Video Class 1.1. specification. There are several references to SVC
configuration in there, although in guvcview I always assume we are using a
unique layer.

Regards,
Paulo Assis
